Any student that is entering 6th
grade in the Mission Attendance Area may participate in the
Hopkins After-School Elementary Advanced Band. Here is some general
info on the band for the 2010-2011 school year:
-
Starts Thursday, September 16th, 2010
-
Meets in Room 23 at Hopkins Junior High
School
-
Class meets from 6:15 - 7:30 p.m.
-
Taught by Mr. Greg Conway, Director of Bands at Hopkins
JHS
-
Uses the Standard of Excellence Method Book,
1 and 2
-
Fee: $150 for the entire year
of instruction (September - May)
-
Experience needed: At least 1 or
more years on a band instrument
Goal: The goal of the class is to
further the students learning on their band instrument by using the Standard
of Excellence books and other songs that will be handed out as the year
progresses. Students are being prepared for the Concert Band (in
some cases, Symphonic Band) at Hopkins in their 7th grade year. The students will be divided into 2 classes (one woodwind, one brass/percussion) to allow them more individual attention. They will combine for some rehearsals and concerts. If
your student loves band and wants to get the most out of their band experience,
then this is the class for them.
Open to students at all four Mission
Attendance Area Elementary Schools:
-
Chadbourne
-
Gomes
-
Mission San-Jose
-
Mission Valley
This program is NOT part of the FEF program.
It is an advanced class that is meant to build on the students knowledge
and help them get to the correct level for placement in band in the 7th
grade. I recommend this class to all 6th graders with band experience
who want to be in band in the 7th grade.
Priority of admittance will be given to students who play trombone, baritone, tuba, french horn, percussion, and oboe, and those who have played for 2 or more years. Those who play flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, and trumpet
may receive a 5 minute private lesson during the first two weeks of class to determine their level of ability and suitability to their instrument.
